About your baseball coach

I have been playing baseball for more than 20 years and coaching youth teams for several seasons. Across six seasons as a head coach, my teams have a combined 49-9-1 record. I have also coached our town all star team as an assistant, sharing many of the responsibilities of the head coach. Parents and players regularly give positive feedback about the improvement they see and the environment I create. My approach is built on a simple idea: players learn best when they enjoy the game, feel supported, and are encouraged to grow. I want players to like playing for me and to know that I take their development seriously. I participate directly in drills by throwing, hitting, fielding, and demonstrating mechanics so they can see how each movement should look. In individual lessons, that means you get clear examples, detailed feedback, and drills tailored to how you move and what you want to improve. I do not believe in yelling at players or embarrassing anyone in front of the team. On the teams I coach, we win and lose together. If a specific mistake needs to be addressed, I handle it one on one and give clear, honest feedback. At the same time, I keep expectations clear and consistent. If effort or focus drops, we reset with conditioning or structured drills to get everyone locked back in. I teach that good baseball comes from strong mechanics, physical strength, discipline, and confidence. We run, do push ups, and talk through game situations so players learn to think the game, not just play it. I want players to enjoy baseball, understand why it is fun, and learn that being good at something is enjoyable even when the work gets tough. I am happy to work on any part of a player’s game, but I have a particular passion for pitching and love helping pitchers sharpen their mechanics, command, and mound presence. Whether you want to improve your pitching, throwing, hitting, or overall baseball IQ, I focus on clear instruction, repeatable fundamentals, and a mindset that helps you succeed on the field.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn the first lesson, my main goal is to get to know the player and see where they are starting from. We do a quick warm up, then I watch them do real baseball actions: throwing, catching, fielding a few ground balls and fly balls, and taking some swings. I also ask about their experience and goals. From there I choose one or two key areas that will help them the most and we spend the rest of the time getting focused reps in those skills. We finish with a short recap and a couple of simple things they can work on between sessions.
Lesson 11+In ongoing lessons, we treat their development as a longer term plan. We keep sharpening the same core skills, add small adjustments as they are ready, and aim our work at specific goals like the upcoming season or a tryout. Sessions still look like real baseball: throwing, fielding, hitting, and talking through what is happening and why. The goal is steady progress, more confidence in games, and a growing love for playing.
Lesson 4-10From lessons four through ten, we start to connect their skills to real situations. Depending on the player, that might mean working on fielding a ball and making the right throw, building a more consistent swing, or learning how to move on the bases. We still use a lot of live reps and baseball actions, just with a little more speed and decision making. I adjust the plan as they improve so we are always working on the things that will show up most often for them on the field.
Lesson 2-3Lessons two and three are built around what I saw in the first session. If throwing is the biggest need, we spend more time throwing. If it is catching or making contact at the plate, we focus there. We keep a simple warm up, then get right into game-like reps: more throws, more ground balls, more swings, all at a speed that matches their comfort level. The idea is to build confidence by improving the exact movements they will use in real games, not just running through random stations.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonIn the first lesson with an advanced player, I start with a short warm up and then go straight into baseball actions at their normal speed. I watch them throw, field, hit, and move through a few common game situations. I also ask about their goals, current team, and any specific issues they are dealing with, such as command, velocity, making more consistent contact, or a certain position. From there I identify one or two main priorities for them and we spend the rest of the session getting focused, game-like reps in those areas. We finish with a clear summary of what we saw and what we will target next.
Lesson 11+In ongoing lessons, we treat training like a season-long or year-to-year plan. We keep refining mechanics, reinforce the changes that are working, and target specific goals such as making a certain team, moving up a level, or taking on a new role. Sessions still look like baseball: live throws, fielding reps, and quality swings with a lot of feedback on both the physical and mental side. We talk about routines, preparation, confidence, and how to respond when things do not go well. The goal is to help the player become more reliable, more confident, and more prepared to compete at a higher level.
Lesson 4-10From lessons four through ten, we start stacking consistency and tying their skills more tightly to game situations. We keep sharpening the same key movements, then add more decision making: pitch selection and plan at the plate, how to attack hitters, where to go with the ball on different plays, and how to handle pressure moments. Depending on the player, this phase might include more position-specific work, double play turns, cuts and relays, or reading the ball off the bat. I adjust each session based on how they are progressing so we are always working on what will help them most in real games, not just repeating the same routine.
Lesson 2-3Lessons two and three are built around the priorities we found in the first session. If the main need is pitching, we spend more time on their delivery, timing, and command while throwing off the mound. If it is hitting, we focus on swing path, contact quality, and approach. If it is defense, we work on reads, footwork, and making strong, accurate throws. I keep the work as close to real baseball as possible, with reps that look and feel like what they will see in games. The goal is to clean up obvious inefficiencies and give them a clear feel for the changes we want.

Youth players
Working with kidsWith younger kids, I keep lessons simple, upbeat, and very hands-on. We focus on real baseball actions at a level that matches where they are right now: throwing, catching, fielding ground balls, tracking fly balls, and taking swings. I use short, easy-to-understand cues and lots of reps so they can learn by doing, not by standing around listening. The pace, difficulty, and goals are adjusted to each child, whether they are brand new to the game or already have a season or two under their belt. The main goals are to build confidence, establish good habits early, and help them leave the field feeling proud of what they did.

Working with teenagersWhen I work with teenagers, I design each session around their current level and specific goals. We focus on real baseball movements at game speed: pitching mechanics, swing path and contact quality, infield or outfield footwork, throwing accuracy, and base running, depending on what they need most. For some players, the priority is refining mechanics and adding consistency. For others, it is learning how to handle game situations, improve their approach at the plate, or prepare for tryouts and higher levels of competition. I expect teens to be engaged, ask questions, and take ownership of their progress, and in return they get clear feedback, targeted work, and training that is directly connected to what they will face in real games.

What you need to bringCleats and their own glove and bat, if they already own them. A batting helmet and water bottle are also recommended. If a player is missing something, just let me know ahead of time and I can usually help cover it.

What I can bringI can provide the basics if you do not already have them: a glove for a right handed player (worn on the left hand), bats, plenty of baseballs, a hitting tee, and other simple training equipment.

As a parent, I couldn’t be more grateful for the positive influence Coach Alex has been both on and off the field. From day one, the coach created an environment that was fun, encouraging, and disciplined while helping the players grow not only as athletes but as individuals. On many occasions, the coach would stay after practice to work one-on-one with players on pitching and batting. That extra effort showed how much Coach Alex truly cares about each player’s development. I’m so grateful for the confidence and growth my child has experienced each season with Coach Alex!

Alex did an excellent job as a coach. He did a great job and inspiring the kids, you could tell that he really had a deep love and appreciation for the game as well as the players. My son, Felix, was hesitating about going up to the 13-14 league but playing with Alex this past season inspired him to continue his baseball career.
