I employ an intuitive approach to teaching the game of baseball. My goal is to help the player discover how their body can work for them on the field. I find that overly detailed, mechanics-based coaching tends to inhibit the natural ability of the human body to create the movements needed to be a successful baseball player. Serendipity is the best, most fun, and most lasting way to learn the game.
The first lesson will begin by discussing what you, the player, want to get out of our training session or sessions. Whether it be a certain skill such as hitting or pitching, mechanics related to a skill, or help with the mental approach to the game, we will work together to create a plan specific to your needs.
The first lesson will conclude with drills that lay a foundation for the player's future improvement.
Drills may include:
-Front-arm swing tee drill
-Rapid-fire net toss (for throwing)
-Catch play
-Closed-eye swings
From lesson eleven and on, we will continue to focus on the foundational aspects of the game for each player, but we will be able to spend time on some of the finer details of each skill to further hone your craft.
Some topics may be:
-Specific, individualized hitting approaches
-Specific pitches or pitching grips for pitchers
-How to call games as a catcher
Lessons four to ten will progress based on how the player is developing their skill set. More advanced and game-specific drills may be used, such as:
-Blitz Ball at bats
-Flat ground bullpen sessions
-Fly balls and ground balls with throws
-Two-plate drill (hitting)
-Mixed block/receive (catching)
The second and third lessons will continue to hone the foundational aspects of hitting, fielding, throwing, or catching.
Drills may include:
-30-60-90 hitting drill
-Transfer progression (catching)
-Pick progressions (infielders)
With advanced players, the first lesson will begin with a discussion of what type of baseball player you are and how we can work to refine your specific skillset. Foundatinally, I use the same principles I use with beginners, but we will work to create a plan specific to the advanced player's play style and abilities.
Lessons eleven onward will address the inevitable ups and downs of a baseball career for each player with continued support and specified coaching for each learning opportunity as it comes.
Lessons four through ten will continue to address the solutions to any issues and will introduce concepts and movements aimed to reach the full potential of every player.
Lessons two and three will be focused on diagnosing any mechanical issues and will implement drills uniquely focused on correcting those flaws.
