Beginner training plan
Your first trainingWith a beginner student, I start by building a strong foundation in technique and form, approaching each movement with patience and clear explanation. The goal is to help the athlete feel comfortable, confident, and supported from the very first session. I introduce simple, controlled drills that highlight balance, stance, and proper mechanics—setting the tone for long‑term success.
Training 2-3During these sessions, we reinforce the fundamentals to ensure the athlete can demonstrate and comprehend proper technique consistently. Once the basics are solid, we begin layering in motion and movement, teaching how technique holds up under light pressure, transitions, and real‑time adjustments. Drills here focus on footwork, controlled mobility, and rhythm—helping the athlete connect form with functional movement.
Training 4-10At this stage, the athlete is ready to expand their skill set. We introduce progressive drills that combine technique, movement, and situational awareness. This includes reaction‑based exercises, controlled competitive reps, and confidence‑building challenges. The focus is on developing consistency, understanding game flow, and preparing the athlete to apply their skills in real scenarios. By Lesson 10, the athlete should show measurable growth in technique, movement quality, confidence, and readiness for intermediate-level training.
Training 11+ The focus shifts from foundational development to strategic growth and real‑world application. At this stage, athletes can expect training that challenges their consistency, decision‑making, and adaptability. We begin introducing intermediate‑level concepts at a pace that matches their confidence and comprehension, ensuring they continue to grow without feeling overwhelmed. These lessons emphasize: - Applying technique under pressure - Reading movement and reacting with purpose - Building situational awareness and game IQ - Strengthening discipline, stamina, and mental readiness As athletes demonstrate readiness, we also begin exploring placement opportunities that match their skill level. This may include small‑group sessions, controlled scrimmages, or environments where they can test their abilities against new challenges. The goal is to help each athlete grow their game through diverse experiences, ensuring they continue progressing with confidence and support.

Working with kidsWhen I work with young athletes, I focus on meeting them exactly where they are. I keep instructions clear, break skills into simple progressions, and make sure every drill has a purpose they can understand.I stay patient, encourage questions, and create an environment where they feel safe to try, make mistakes, and grow. I pay close attention to their confidence and energy — slowing things down when they need support and challenging them when they’re ready to take the next step.Whether they’re kids or teenagers, my goal is the same: make sure every athlete feels seen, supported, and capable. When they feel valued, they learn faster, stay engaged, and enjoy the process.

About your basketball coach

Basketball is my language; I teach players to read the court and translate effort into measurable improvement. I bring many years of teaching experience, blending tactical insight, technical skill development, and a patient, upbeat approach to help athletes reach their potential. Coach Cartrell Best founded Best of the Best Outreach with a passion for developing the whole athlete—both on and off the court. His personal journey of overcoming cerebral palsy as a youth has shaped his coaching philosophy and deepened his commitment to helping young people navigate life's challenges with resilience and determination. Through his own experiences with sports and personal development, Coach Best recognized the transformative power of basketball in building character, confidence, and life skills. This understanding drives his holistic approach to youth development, weaving together athletic excellence with emotional wellness, academic achievement, and civic engagement. "The recipe for life is in how one learns to move through life's stages with the best personal skills and attitude," Coach Best explains. This philosophy is woven into every aspect of Best of the Best Outreach's program pillars, creating lessons that extend far beyond the basketball court into every area of our athletes' lives.
