Evaluate skill level. Get a feel for habits, effort, and weaknesses. Begin with high-tempo drills to assess conditioning and ball control.
Tailor to player’s role/position. Emphasize game planning, playmaking under duress, counter moves, and leadership mindset. Include situational breakdowns (e.g., beating traps, closing out games), and develop a routine for pre-game prep and recovery.
Simulate game actions: contested layups, pick-and-roll reads (with coach mimicking defender), and tight window decision-making. Train at game pace, with fatigue, and mix in short bursts of 1v1.
Focus on sharpening individual skills under pressure (e.g., contested shooting, quick decisions) and introduce higher-level footwork and off-ball movement.
