About your clarinet teacher
Taught for many years at a studio through Meyer Music in North KC, helping middle & high school students achieve their goals and success with solo and ensemble performance. I assist these students with preparing mentally and musically for college auditions as well. I've assisted my professors with teaching college level students advanced techniques such as phrasing, multiphonics, double-tonguing, etc... I've also had the unique experience of holding master classes while in the Marine Corps band

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWe first become familiar with the parts of the clarinet and how to care for it, putting it together and taking it apart, properly storing and handling procedures. We learn proper posture for performance and what an "embouchure" is.
Lesson 2-3This is where we begin to work on support and embouchure growth structure, to ensure a basic technical foundation is strong for future growth. We're making sounds on the instrument at this stage!
Lesson 4-10Learning to read music and associate fingerings with notes. Learning to play our first song by ear, as well as from reading!
Lesson 11+How to relax and enjoy themselves as much as possible! It's easy to become over burdened and "consumed" (stressed out) by music, especially certain conductors 😉 or technical passages... sometimes the best way to play the part is to "let go" and just let it happen!
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonI typically begin with a simple sonata or prepared piece of the students choice to ascertain strengths and flaws.
Baermann Method for the Clarinet C Major and a minor studies at 60 bpm.
Lesson 2-3Possible embouchure and support adjustments, posture corrections, tuning issues, progressing through Baermann gradually.
Lesson 4-10Continuation of addressing basic technical concerns, ensuring proper support and embouchure control, becoming more agile and relaxed while performing
Lesson 11+Greater attention to tone control, tuning, timing and expression. Progressing through Baermann method one Major & minor key per week until entire book is complete. Then method is restarted at 80 bpm in the same fashion until complete... then at 100 bpm... at 120 bpm you're ready for professional auditions!
Youth players
Working with kidsI keep younger kids engaged in playing with lessons that are fun and enjoyable! Learning to play songs we know how to sing (play by ear) is a wonderful skill to develop for having fun throughout an entire lifetime!
Working with teenagersI approach lessons with teenage students in a "competative" aspect while still addressing the basic foundational studies. I encourage them to attend district and state competitions (as I once attended) and to audition as often as possible! Positive reinforcement and growth through challenge, while remembering that it's ok to fail because that's where we learn to succeed!!!
What you need to bringStudents should provide their own instrument, reeds, music, metronome and accessories.
What I can bringI have a minidisc recorder so students can "hear" themselves as everyone else does. I also provide coffee straws to help with learning to properly focus the airstream into the mouthpiece. I will provide manuscript paper for theory sessions and have a keyboard for such studies as well.
