Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFirst lesson is how to tune the strings and then how to hold the instrument and properly make a sound on it.
Lesson 2-3If using a bow, we will talk about bow grip styles and technique. If not using a bow and primarily using pizzicato, then we will practice how to hold a note a pluck at the same time and get a solid tone. Basic notation will be discussed as a concept.
Lesson 4-10Learning about basic positioning, scale patterns and proper hand shapes and technique for facility and efficiency.
Lesson 11+Coordinate with the student what direction they want to go. Find a group of songs they are interested in learning and start developing the skills to attain that goal.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonAll of these lessons for an advanced track are co-created with the student. Each advanced student is at a different place in their journey and my job is to figure out how to get them to the next level. This requires assessment and time.

Youth players
Working with teenagersI’ve taught middle school students for close to 20 years and I am very comfortable with that age group. The key is determining what they are looking to learn and then getting buy in.

What you need to bringFor upright bass: Bring your bass, your bow, your music, and an iPad if you own one. For electric upright or electric bass: Bring your instrument, a strap/stand, an instrument cable, a chair if necessary, and an iPad if you own one.

What I can bringIf you are taking lessons via Zoom, then you will need to have at least a microphone and a webcam that can show your entire body and instrument for assessment of position. If I am coming to your location, I can provide an amplifier if necessary.

Sam is great. A winning combination of knowledge, passion, structure, and flexibility. I am an older double bass student and as such have many questions that may not fit a traditional structure, but Sam has been always patient and willing to let me go off on tangents but then guides me back to the fundamentals of bass playing and musicianship. At any level you can't go wrong learning from Sam.

Kai’s bass lessons became a bright spot each week. Sam was patient, encouraging, and inspiring, helping Kai grow not only as a bassist but also in his confidence and love of music. We’re truly grateful for his positive impact and highly recommend him.
