About your football coach

I’m a former Division I football player and Under Armour All-American who played at USC and San Diego State University. As a coach, I focus on developing football fundamentals, technique, athletic ability, and game knowledge. My coaching style is positive, structured, and hands-on, while challenging each athlete to improve.

Beginner training plan
Your first trainingI start by evaluating the athlete’s current skill level, movement, stance, footwork, coordination, and football knowledge. We’ll work through basic stance and starts, agility drills, and position-specific fundamentals. My goal is to identify strengths and areas for improvement while making sure the athlete feels comfortable, confident, and excited to train.
Training 2-3Now we start building the foundation. We’ll focus on proper stance, explosive first steps, footwork, balance, hand placement, body control, and position-specific fundamentals. I’ll teach athletes not only how to perform each technique, but why it works. My priority is developing great habits early so they have a strong foundation as the game gets faster and more competitive.
Training 4-10This is where fundamentals begin turning into football skills. Training progresses into reaction drills, change of direction, explosiveness, tackling fundamentals, block recognition, hand fighting, pass-rush techniques, and game-like situations based on the athlete’s position. Sessions become progressively more challenging while we continue correcting technique and tracking improvement. The goal is for parents to see a more confident, disciplined, and technically sound athlete.
Training 11+At this stage, training becomes highly individualized. We’ll identify the details separating where the athlete is now from where they want to be and attack those areas. We’ll refine technique, improve speed and explosiveness, develop football IQ, and recreate situations they’ll experience in games. Whether their goal is making a team, earning more playing time, becoming a starter, or preparing for the next level, every session will have a purpose and a clear path toward improvement.

Youth players
Working with kidsI keep training fun, positive, and structured while building strong fundamentals. I break techniques into simple, age-appropriate steps and use engaging drills that develop coordination, footwork, confidence, and football skills. Every child learns differently, so I adjust my coaching style to their ability and experience while challenging them to improve and develop a genuine love for the game.

Working with teenagersWith teenagers, I increase the intensity and focus on preparing them for real competition. Training becomes more position-specific, with an emphasis on technique, explosiveness, strength, football IQ, and game situations. I also focus on discipline, confidence, and accountability. Having competed at the Division I level, I want young athletes to understand not only what it takes physically to improve, but also the preparation and mindset required to reach the next level.

What you need to bringAthletes should bring athletic clothing, football cleats or appropriate training shoes, and plenty of water. Position-specific equipment such as gloves is recommended if normally used. Please bring a positive attitude and be ready to work!

What I can bringFootballs, cones, agility equipment, resistance bands, training markers, and other football-specific training aids needed for drills and skill development.

I’ve taken over 30 lessons with Coach Heyward, and every session has been a great experience. He does a great job explaining techniques in a way that’s easy to understand and making sure you know why you’re doing each drill. He keeps you engaged throughout the entire workout and is always encouraging, even when he’s pushing you to get better. The atmosphere is positive and fun, but you’re still getting quality instruction and improving every session. Coach Heyward genuinely cares about his athletes and makes you want to keep coming back and getting better. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to improve their football skills.

Coach Heyward helped me a lot with playing defensive line and tight end. We worked on my footwork, hands, technique, and getting quicker off the ball. He explains things in a way that’s easy to understand and always pushes me to get better. I definitely feel more confident in my game and more prepared for my high school season.
