Today I am writing you about a fellow musician I’ve had the pleasure to listen to, perform with and learn from over many years. His name is Jay Wilson. When I first heard him, he was playing with legendary Dallas band Hung Jury. His guitar playing and vocals were pro and his saxophone solos blew the room away. We became friends and sometimes I'd get a chance to get up and sing one with his band. He has always been inclusive and shared his talent and insights with other musicians. We considered him a Jedi musical master. Jay went on to play with many well known and respected bands. I remember going to see him once while he was playing with 60’s icon Donovan Leitch. It was magical evening. They played Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow and the evening culminated with an extended jam of Season of the Witch. I’m sure it’s still playing somewhere in the universe. From traditional Robert Johnson Style Blues to Stan Getz on the Saxophone to the Talking Heads, Jay traverses any genre with tasteful appreciation. Over the years I’ve never hesitated to call Jay for musical advice, emergency musical first aid or continuing education; and he has never hesitated to help. If you get a chance to sit down with Jay and listen to your favorite album, you should do it. If you or anyone you know has an opportunity to study music of any kind with Jay …. DO IT!

My son loves his time with Jay. Jay has been able to teach him how to truly hear the music beyond what is just on a page. Jay has taught my son to feel the music, to hear the melodies and harmonies beyond what is written on the page. Jay is an incredible musician and has been able to teach my son to express his music well beyond what is written on a page. Despite being a guitar player of over 40 years, it is rare that I come away from performing or just jamming with Jay Wilson without learning something. And Jay continues to hone his craft through a variety of instruments with even more years of experience than I. I personally know several of his students who not only excelled under his teaching, but as adults continue to be competent players with a lifelong love for music. I would confidently recommend Jay for aspiring or experienced musicians hoping to take their skills to the next level.

Jay is a great musician and guitar teacher with a thorough knowledge of a wide range of musical genres. He is able to take difficult concepts such as music theory, technique, chord forms, scales, etc. and explain them in a clear and understandable way and help you to apply them to the music you are wanting to learn. Jay definitely gave me the tools I needed to move forward in my guitar playing experience!

Please know that Jay Wilson has been a multi-instrument musician for decades. He has also taught several students throughout the years. He is not only super knowledgeable but it is able to teach people at all age levels with kindness, grace and lots of patience (and humor). What I can bringI can provide a loaner guitar or saxophone for a reasonable rental fee. I can also assist in evaluating and choosing an instrument for purchase.
