Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first thing we will do is talk about the basics of the game and the basics of being a goalie
Lesson 11+We will continue to work on weaker areas.
Lesson 4-10We will find weaker spots such as low shots/clears and adjust those.
Lesson 2-3We will start to learn more goalie drills and hand-eye coordination drills.
Youth players
Working with kidsWhen I work with kids, I adapt the lesson by focusing on their energy level, attention span, and skill level. If something isn’t clicking, I’ll switch up the drill — maybe simplify it, turn it into a game, or break it down step by step. I also read the group: if they’re getting bored or frustrated, I pivot to keep them engaged while still teaching the core skills. The key is being flexible but intentional — making sure they’re learning, having fun, and building confidence every step of the way.
Working with teenagersBeing closer in age to the teens actually helps me connect with them. I adapt my lessons by keeping things competitive and purposeful — I explain the 'why' behind drills so they buy in. If they’re zoning out or not feeling it that day, I’m quick to switch things up — sometimes that means dialing up the intensity, or turning a drill into a challenge or scrimmage to get their energy back. I’ve learned that with teens, respect goes both ways — I keep it real with them, but I also make sure we’re progressing and not just going through the motion
