We would begin by having you give me a list of your favorite genres, artists, or songs and I would map out a custom made curriculum for you. Each song will introduce a new rhythm, scale, set of chords, melody, or other element so that you are gradually increasing your vocabulary and developing your musicianship. For a warm up, I pull exercises out of the songs themselves so that any scales and patterns that you do are directly related to the song that you're working on. Then, we would work on repertoire. Through almost any song, I can make an arrangement so that you can be playing your favorite music as soon as possible. I teach in a very straight forward and step-by-step fashion so that every note has purpose and comes out as clearly as possible. Other topics that I cover include music theory, how to practice effectively, the function of each note (melodic statement, resolving a phrase, color, etc), and ear training. If you need more content or have any questions through the week, please let me know and I would be happy to send you more material. Optionally, you're welcome to send over any videos of yourself for feedback or we can move on to the next topic. I studied Music Education at New York University and have taught privately for the past 11 years. My main instrument is the drums and here is my bio. Eric Ching is a jazz drummer and composer currently residing in Houston, TX. He plays music with a tremendous amount of purpose and is infinitely creative in the way he manages color and shape. With his compositions, he aims to explore new territory while channeling the spirits of McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Garrett. His pieces all have a searching quality where he isn't quite sure what he's looking for, but he'll know when he's found it. He yearns for the unexpected and his songs gradually unfold like a Tarantino movie. Eric grew up in the SF Bay Area where he studied with Akira Tana (Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt) and spent much of his time driving up to the city to go to jam sessions. Then, he went to New York University for Music Education where he studied under Ron McClure (Joe Henderson, Wynton Kelly), Sean Statser (NYU Percussion), and briefly with Kenny Washington (renowned jazz drummer). Some of the people he has played with are Robbie Laws (award winning blues guitarist), George Colligan (Jack Dejohnette, Buster Williams, Lenny White), Anna Crumley (Grammy winning vocalist), Reggie Houston (Fats Domino Band), Ben Rice (award winning blues guitarist), Jennifer Keith (jazz vocalist and Las Vegas headliner), Charlie Porter (Grammy winning trumpet player), Bob Stark (Grammy winning engineer), Eric Reed (Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter), Josh Nelson (Natalie Cole, film/tv), Greg Goebel (renowned jazz pianist), and many more!
