I’m a former math teacher and former techie turned pickleball enthusiast. Over the last two years I’ve invested a massive amount of time studying the sport and breaking it down into its fundamental pieces in order to teach myself how to excel at the game. I that time, I’ve gone from an absolute beginner to an advanced level player - my DUPR is 4.5+, I’ve won multiple medals in tournaments, and I’ve earned a Professional Coach certificate through PPR. My journey is still ongoing as I pursue the 5.0 level and beyond - as a student of the game, this means dedicating time to watching the pros and their lessons, analyzing recordings of my own matches, and devoting more time to drilling than playing. As a former math teacher, I take pride in helping my students grow and maximize their potential. It’s in my nature to break things down into their simplest components in order to have my students learn in the most effective way possible. I’ve learned so much about pickleball and truly love seeing people improve quickly and have fun.

I'm a 4.0 player and I’ve had a few sessions with Alan. This guy is a true student of the game. I wanted to improve my serve and he said I was using too much shoulder and not any wrist lag. No idea what wrist lag was. He explained it like it was cracking a whip. He took videos of me before and after and I could see an immediate improvement. Later on I wanted to work on my backhand volleys and we drilled on punches, rolls, and flicks over the course of a few sessions. He helped me cut the habit of slicing my volleys and keeping the contact point out front. I particularly like when if he has time after a session, he’ll play a couple games with me and give me direct feedback.

Alan is one of those rare really successful but incredibly humble people. You’d never know unless you really pressed him but he went to Harvard, then became a math teacher, then helped found an analytics company that went IPO, and retired early to be a full time dad. You can tell by how he coaches - clear, patient, precise - why he’s had the success he’s had. It’s a joy not only to be coached by him but also getting to know him personally.

I could tell right away that Alan used to be a school teacher. He was patient, broke everything down into digestible bits, and was extremely positive. We worked on my transition zone resets and after observing me for a bit, he gave me very direct and clear feedback on how to improve them. We drilled and I got to practice some new things. I’m excited to do the drills with my friends to get even better at resets.

I’m in my 70s and wanted to learn pickleball so I could understand why my son was so obsessed with it. He got me a lesson with Alan that I’m very thankful for. I’ve never played sports before and I warned Alan beforehand but he was incredibly kind and patient. He explained to me the rules and we practiced “dinking” … what a silly way to describe something ha.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn the first lesson, we will work together to understand your goals and establish a baseline level of your skills and abilities. We will start developing knowledge of the rules and fundamental techniques like grip, stance, swing, and footwork. You’ll leave understanding why and how to dink.
Lesson 11+Continued observation, feedback, and focus on one or two skills each lesson with drilling and games.
Lesson 4-10Now that you’ve played in a game or two, I will work with you to understand areas that could use the greatest improvement and we will focus each lesson on improving one or two specific techniques or tactics each lesson. You’ll leave with specific drills you can do to continue to improve those skills.
Lesson 2-3We will continue developing fundamentals techniques around grip, stance, swing, footwork, contact point, and follow through. You’ll practice more dinking and start moving backwards into the transition zone. We’ll introduce serving and returning as well, with an ultimate goal of having you play in a full simulated game by the end lesson three. You’ll leave being able to play a game with other beginners.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonYou are a 4.0 player looking to advance to 4.5. Before our first lesson I’d like to get on a quick call with you to understand your goals and areas you think you need to improve. At the lesson, I’ll assess your overall skills and the areas you feel like you need to improve. We’ll then work on selected skills through technique breakdowns and drilling. You’ll leave with clear feedback and drills to improve the addressed skills.
Lesson 4-10Going into future lessons, I’d layer in my recommendations of skills to improve alongside your desired improvements and come up with a plan of areas to build each week.
Lesson 2-3We’d continue to assess, breakdown, and drill the skills you’ve identified as needing improvement. You’ll leave with continued feedback and drills to continue your improvement.

What you need to bringYou should wear court appropriate shoe, athletic clothes appropriate for the weather (including a hat and glasses for the sun), and bring plenty of water and snacks.

What I can bringI can bring paddles and balls for you to use.
