My name is Roberto. I was born and raised in San José, Costa Rica, and I came to the United States nine years ago to play college tennis. I graduated from Azusa Pacific University (nation's top 10 NCAA Division II school) with a B.A. in Business Management and served as the team's captain on my last semester. I have also coached beginner and intermediate tennis players of all ages in Costa Rica as well as several collegiate dual matches. Regarding my playing history, I have played tournaments in over 10 countries, obtained a junior international ranking, and reached a ranking of #8 in Costa Rica. As of this year, I started coaching pickleball and the experience has been no different! Concepts are very similar and time to raise level is actually shorter!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI like to get to know the player better and know his or her goals. If you want to have fun and get a nice workout, I will focus on hitting, playing points, and doing fun drills that will for sure make you feel that you made the most out of the session. If you are a beginner and want to learn the basics, I can work in a very technical aspect and make sure you master the bases of each stroke before moving on to competition and strategies.
Lesson 11+The lessons moving forward will involve actual gameplay, strategic decision-making, more physical conditioning, and address any other goals the student wants to accomplish during this journey!
Lesson 4-10Here we start incorporating more physical conditioning. Footwork, covering more court space, etc.
Lesson 2-3Fundamentals are very important so these lessons will consist on developing a habit out of the right technique.
Advanced training plan

Lesson 11+Based on students’ goals, I will accommodate a game plan around those goals. Since fundamentals are mastered at this point, physical conditioning and drills will always be there.
Lesson 4-10More matchplay, and develop a good, competitive mentality that will help them in their competitions.
Lesson 2-3For more advanced players, I focus on tactics, mental strength, conditioning, and matchplay.
Youth players
Working with kidsFun is the key word. Kids get distracted easily so I will set fun goals that will make them focus for short amounts of time and simultaneously get better
Working with teenagersTeenagers start making more decisions by themselves so I want to tailor the lessons to their goals. Once I learn about their goals, we’ll work on drills and incentives that will help them get better and still have lots of fun!
