Focus on safety and basics:
• Introduction to surfboard parts, leash, and wax.
• Beach safety: rip currents, surf etiquette, where to paddle.
• Dry land practice: popping up on the board (from lying down to standing).
• In the water: catching small whitewater waves while lying down, then practicing first pop-ups.
Length of lesson is about 1.5 to 2 hours
Develop independence and style:
• Paddling out and catching waves without assistance.
• Reading surf conditions, currents, and choosing the right spot.
• Refining turns (frontside/backside).
• Linking maneuvers: cutbacks, trimming along the face of the wave.
• Surf etiquette in crowded lineups.
• Developing personal style and setting goals (longboarding skills vs. shortboarding progression).
Progress to green waves and control:
• Learning to paddle out safely (duck dives/turtle rolls for small waves).
• Catching unbroken “green” waves with assistance.
• Angle take-offs (not just straight rides).
• Basic turning and trimming (shifting weight to control speed/direction).
• Building endurance and confidence in different surf conditions.
Build confidence in the water:
• Review of pop-up technique and balance.
• Practice paddling technique (efficient strokes, positioning on board).
• Catching whitewater waves consistently while standing.
• Intro to reading waves and timing your paddle.
