About your violin coach

Virtuoso violinist whose musical journey began at the tender age of 2 under the guidance of his mother. Amos's talent was evident from the start, with a solo debut at just 8 years old and admission to The Juilliard School's prestigious Pre-College Division at 12. Formally trained at the Peabody Conservatory and The Juilliard School under the mentorship of renowned instructors Pamela Frank and Ronald Copes, Amos further honed his craft through a fellowship with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas. Amos has graced the stage as a soloist with esteemed orchestras such as the New World Symphony Orchestra, Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra, and the Orquesta Filarmonica de Medellin. Equally adept as an orchestra musician, he performs with esteemed ensembles, including the Cleveland Pops and Firelands Symphony Orchestra. With a passion for nurturing the next generation of musicians, Amos has held faculty positions at institutions like the New World School of the Arts and the Music School of Delaware. Now, he brings his wealth of experience and expertise to Northeast Ohio, offering exceptional instruction to aspiring violinists of all levels. Outside of music, Amos enjoys exploring Cleveland's vibrant culinary scene with his family, adding yet another dimension to his rich and dynamic life.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn our first lesson, we will focus on how to properly hold the violin in both rest and playing position and move into making basic motions across the strings.
Lesson 11+Lessons 11 and beyond will ease the student into a routine of exercises, new music selections at weekly intervals, and setting performance goals.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4 through 10 will transition into selection of music for study and expand on technical knowledge.
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2 and 3 will move into basic note reading and continue with technical instruction.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonIn our first lesson, I will ask the student to play anything they feel best represents their level of skill. I will work on a few things that I see immediately and at the end we will form a plan for the first few lessons to give them an idea of what to expect. I will also set expectations for lessons.
Lesson 11+Lessons 11 and beyond are custom built to serve the students needs moving forward.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4-10 will allow us to move into a weekly routine of technical exercises and scales to go along with any repertoire selections
Lesson 2-3In lessons 2-3, we will follow through on the first set of plans agreed to by both of us and start developing a practice routine.

Youth players
Working with kidsEvery child is different, but at the same time all fundamentals are the same. I will focus on short term goals with weekly lessons so that students can see their progress.

Working with teenagersWorking with teenagers requires the inclusion of more long term goals to accompany short term goals as well as an emphasis on practice and problem solving skills.

What you need to bringStudents will need to bring the following items to lessons: 1. Violin 2. Bow 3. Shoulder rest or sponge 4. Rosin 5. Pencil 6. Notebook for assignments 7. Method book of choice. For beginners, I recommend either Essential Elements Book 1 or String Builder Book 1.

What I can bringI will provide the following items: 1. A music stand 2. Copies of music when needed 3. Chairs for parents/guardians in attendance

Amos is an expert instructor who draws upon his deep experience as a musician and his genuine warmth as a human being to create lessons that are focused, affirming and motivational. As an adult beginner with no musical training, I have A LOT to learn. That came sometimes feel daunting, but Amos breaks down the enormous body of what-I-don’t-know to small bits I can practice, learn and build upon. His feedback is honest and kind. And it’s a joy to hear him talk about the music and violinists I should listen to and learn from. I highly recommend him!

As an adult beginner I really appreciate Amos' instruction. His approach connected with me immediately because I was looking for an instructor who would teach me how to evaluate what I was doing and be able to make corrections while I practiced. He also has a subtle way of correction that includes positive reinforcement. Even over video He sees what I'm doing and what corrections I need. I have progressed much more than I thought I would after 6 or 7 lessons.

Just one lesson in and I feel very encouraged. Amos gave me a very attainable plan for practicing that gives me clear direction and actually makes it fun. I can’t wait for the next lesson.

When my daughter came to you she couldn’t read music and was ready to quit. Now she’s begging for more music!
