Great drills, a little of energy and enthusiasm
Adan
Lessons taken: 1
I coached Adan for 3 weeks during a summer camp and my colleague and I bought him some legos for his birthday. His mom said we were the reason he looked forward to camp. The best compliment a coach can get is when a student is excited to play more tennis.
Sammy
Lessons taken: 1
Sammy said to me after a day at summer camp I was the best coach she has ever had because I was “sweet.” It only inspired me more to show kids the attention they deserve while teaching them a fun sport.
Wesley
Lessons taken: 1
Wesley was struggling with his backhand one clinic, but he kept his head high and we kept working on getting that left shoulder through the ball. By the end of the lesson he was smiling while hitting his backhand because he saw the progression. After clinic his mom thanked me for being patient with him.
Marcel
Lessons taken: 1
At the end of class Marcel asked “Coach Mattie can you play pac-man with us!?” (tag but you have to stay on the lines). Knowing the kids wanted me to play with them means I succeeded in the challenge being more than a coach, but a friend.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI would ask my student what they want to achieve in this sport. From there I would move into variations of feeding and/or rallying, incorporating small goals to keep them engaged and motivated.
Lesson 11+Now that the body has been properly equipped I will train the mind and teach strategies to my student on patterns, and plays that are successful and necessary in tennis. Also continuing to develop stronger overall shots.
Lesson 4-10Directing the ball as well as the technical aspect of volleys, overheads and serves would be introduced but still mainly working on strengthening groundstrokes through rotation, footwork and proper technique.
Lesson 2-3I would dive deeper into the technique behind groundstrokes and proper preparation to develop good habits in the future.

Youth players
Working with kidsI would incorporate mini goals and games throughout the lesson to keep them engaged and having fun. I bring a lot of energy to the lesson that in the past has rubbed off on my students.

Working with teenagersI would incorporate more competitive games while still teaching the basic concepts of tennis. I would ask them what is their strongest and weakest part of their game and work on how to fix it.

What you need to bringStudents should bring water, running shoes and an excited mindset!

What I can bringI will provide balls and a racket for kids if necessary.
