Bio: My journey into competitive pickleball began in November 2023, and since then, I've become completely hooked on the sport. Despite my relatively short time in the pickleball scene, my background in various racket sports, such as tennis and ping pong, has given me a solid foundation to quickly pick up the game's nuances. With a passion for pickleball driving me, I dedicate 10-14 hours each week to honing my skills on the court. I've already delved into tournament play, competing in round-robin and men's doubles events, where I've gained invaluable experience and insights into the game. I’ve also competed and won in a MLP style team tournament at the 14.0 level. Beyond my own pursuits, I've also enjoyed helping numerous friends, family members, and peers discover and improve their pickleball game. Jack

Bio: Experienced Pickleball pro focused on growing the sport in Round Rock and Austin. I began playing tennis with my father at the age of 12. After moves to Arkansas and Germany my dad took me to the tennis, racquetball, pickleball, and squash courts to teach me the variety of those fast paced sports including the agony of defeat while our family moved around for the Air Force. He taught me how to play and compete. After learning and competing for a few years, I have had the privilege of passing on the game of tennis to thousands of young people including my younger brother who went on to play in 3 straight state tournaments in Texas along with 35 other high schoolers where 16 state titles were won. I have always taught or coached something but I officially began my tennis pro career at a Country Club as an assistant pro and started my pickleball coaching a few years after that. After a few lessons I was hooked for life. Teaching Pickleball to kids and adults is like not working at all plus the fun of working outside was just too hard to give up. Four years later, I became a Head Pro where I helped develop several state champions and highly ranked junior players. Then a chance to coach basketball came along so I loaded up the truck, with the help of my older brother and moved to the Austin area where I am also able to teach both tennis and Pickleball at Clay Madsen Rec Center while I was coaching track tennis, and Basketball at an inner city school..

Bio: Are you ready to learn how to play pickleball? Take your pickleball game to the next level? Host an epic pickleball corporate party or team-building event? Look no further, as I am here to guide you through an exhilarating journey on the court. With an impressive record of 13 tournament victories under my belt in events up to the 5.0 level, I am thrilled to offer you the opportunity to join my highly sought-after pickleball corporate events, clinics, and private lessons! Pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in the country, has captivated players of all ages and skill levels. As a certified instructor and tournament player, I have experienced the thrill of competition firsthand and developed a profound understanding of the game's intricacies. With my proven expertise and strategic insight, I am eager to help you unlock your full potential and elevate your pickleball skills to new heights! Oh and about the nickname "Danimal," it's a funny story really. About 2 months after I first started playing pickleball, I entered a tournament and had to register with the USAPA (USA Pickleball Association). On the registration form, they ask you for a nickname, which I entered "Danimal" thinking no one would ever see it. Sure enough, during my first tournament, when being called over the loudspeakers for my matches, the announcer yelled Danimal rather than my first or last name. I was embarrassed and couldn't believe it. However, while walking to the courts, everyone high-fived me and told me they loved the nickname. That weekend, I won a gold medal in Men's Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Men's Doubles completing a Triple Crown in my first tournament. Lo and behold, the nickname has stuck and is now forever

Michael

Bio: I have proudly called Austin home since 2001. I’m one those Californians who found their outdoor haven in this vibrant city. The “work hard - play hard” philosophy has always resonated with me. When I’m not focused on my professional endeavors, I’m out enjoying a wide range of outdoor activities, from cycling and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) to surfing and snowboarding. I’m also deeply committed to giving back to this community through volunteering and fundraising, as well as embracing live music, exploring new dining options, and embarking on exciting travel adventures. One of my greatest passions is pickleball. On average, I devote 3-6 hours per week to this exhilarating sport. What draws me to pickleball is the perfect blend of social interaction and competitive spirit that it offers. Beyond playing, I take immense pleasure in introducing new comers to the game, providing guidance, and coaching them to improve their skills. Whether you’re a beginner just starting out or someone looking to elevate their pickleball skills from beginner to intermediate, I would relish the opportunity to connect with you and work together. Your growth in pickleball is my priority, and I’m eager to help you achieve your goals in this exciting sport. Thank you for taking the time to learn about me, and I hope to hear from you soon. Let’s play and learn together!

Bio: My love for racquet sports started early with tennis — I even played on my high school’s JV team! Being active and outdoorsy has always been a big part of who I am, which probably stems from growing up in the stunning landscapes of Colorado. After moving to Austin 12 years ago, I stumbled upon pickleball about 3 years back, and it's been a total game-changer! The fast-paced action, the social atmosphere, and the opportunity to constantly improve have made it my favorite way to stay active, challenge myself and have fun.

Coach Kersten

pickleball coach

Promptly after booking with me, you'll receive my welcome message and question: "Looking forward to your lesson. When you have a chance please let me know, in 2-3 sentences, about your pickleball, racquet sports, and/or other sports experience, and what you hope to learn/improve in your lesson(s)." Student responses help me to get right into and make the most of our time during their lesson. Then, based on my ongoing assessment during the lesson, I will customize the lessons to the student's level and learning style. My teaching style utilizes evidenced based skill acquisition approaches so students learn and retain task/goal oriented pickleball skills more naturally. Every shot in pickleball can be accomplished using a variety of techniques and no technique is "the right correct way." I can teach you the slice, top, push and lift dink, the overhead extreme angle put away, drive and drop and roll and flick volleys. How about the slice, top or lob serve. And, I can teach you how to hit deceptive shots too. I'm considered a power player with excellent finesse paddle skills. I can play right and left handed, hit dinks and half volleys between my legs and behind my back. If you want to pursue mastering pickleball and playing top level, even professional level, I'll get you to the highest level you aspire to the fastest!

Advanced lessons are for players who have a firm grasp of all the fundamentals and are looking to improve a designated skill within the game. The first lesson would include and introduction between coach and student, assessment of current skill level, and tailored instruction to help elevate the student's game. This is typically done by either drilling a new skill or practicing in a way that promotes advantage over opponents while playing to the student's strengths as a player.

The first lesson for an advanced player

K

If we are going to be working out doors and it is a hot day of course sunscreen or a visor and plenty of liquids and potentially a few healthy snacks or a good idea to bring. Your favorite paddle and if you have a specific ball you would like to hit around but I will bring several really good quality outdoor balls and if it is indoors I will bring all of the indoor balls.

I provide balls, and if needed, have paddles to borrow too. Bring your paddle if you have one, water, small towel, and wear light comfortable active wear plus non-marking court shoes that have good lateral support.

What do coaches say about teaching kids and youth?

K

Coach Kersten

pickleball coach

Lessons for kids are designed using a constraint-led approach and are conducted based on age of students. Age 8-under will incorporate more appropriate methods for their motor skill level, whereas 9 and older can incorporate more advanced skill learning.

Patience is key. Depending on age, some kids pick up the sport and can progress like any other player. It does usually take slightly longer for kids to develop proper technique and consistency. That being said, it improves hand-eye coordination, control, and is a great form of exercise with relatively low risk of injury when compared to other contact sports.
